Rules to know
- The longest piece you may haul is 6 feet.
- Whitebark pine is a threatened species: do not cut, remove or damage it.
- Chainsaws need a working spark arrester (.023 inch screen or less).
- Carry a shovel and an 8-ounce or larger pressurized fire extinguisher.
- Check the Industrial Fire Precaution Level before you go.
- Carry both your permit and tags while cutting and hauling.
- A Firewood Assistance Program lets a third party cut for people with physical or medical limits; both must be present to buy the permit.
Before you go
- Check fire restrictions the day you cut. Chainsaw use is often limited or banned in hot, dry weather.
- Cut only on National Forest land in open areas, never on private, state, tribal or BLM land.
- Stay on open roads. Use the forest's Motor Vehicle Use Map.
- Keep firewood local. Moving it can spread insects and diseases that kill trees.
